The president of the Sociedad Rural Argentina (SRA), Nicolás Pino, has proposed guanaco meat as a viable alternative for domestic consumption, highlighting its growing prominence in Patagonia amid rising beef prices and economic challenges.
Pino’s remarks come as the beef market has seen significant price increases, prompting producers to explore alternatives like donkey meat. He emphasized that guanaco meat, a high-quality protein, should be commercialized nationwide to address both economic and environmental concerns.
The rural leader noted the sustained growth of the guanaco population in recent years, which has negatively impacted sheep farming due to predation and adverse economic conditions. He stressed the need to rethink production strategies in Patagonia to achieve a sustainable balance.
Pino also commented on the March inflation rate of 3.4%, stating it would likely disappoint President Javier Milei and Economy Minister Luis Caputo. However, he acknowledged their confidence in achieving a zero inflation target in the near future.
As Argentina navigates economic uncertainty, the potential of guanaco meat to diversify the protein market and support rural economies remains a topic of increasing interest and debate among stakeholders.
